Giving gifts is the fastest way to raise friendship in Stardew Valley — but the game hides the math. This guide covers the point values, the birthday rule, and the items almost everyone loves, so you stop guessing and start heart-farming.

How many friendship points does a gift give?

Every gift lands in one of five taste tiers, and the tier decides the point swing:

Quality matters too: silver, gold, and iridium versions of an item add a multiplier on top of the tier. You can give each villager two gifts per week, plus one extra on their birthday.

Why are birthdays the biggest gift day?

A birthday gift multiplies the point value by 8. A Loved birthday gift is worth 640 points — more than two whole hearts (250 points each) in a single hand-off. Check each villager’s birthday on their page — Abigail’s is Fall 13, Sebastian’s is Winter 10 — and set a calendar reminder the week before.

The catch: a Disliked gift on a birthday multiplies the penalty too. When in doubt, use a universal love.

What gifts does everyone love?

Five items are Loved by essentially every villager in town:

• Pearl — Night Market mermaid puzzle, fishing
• Prismatic Shard — rare drop, Skull Cavern
• Rabbit’s Foot — lucky rabbits or the traveling cart
• Magic Rock Candy — Desert trader, Thursdays
• Stardrop Tea — worth +250 flat, the single biggest gift in the game

Exceptions exist: Haley is the famous Prismatic Shard hater, and Penny hates Rabbit’s Foot — the two named exceptions to the universal-love list. Always check the individual page before spending a rare drop.

What’s a safe everyday gift?

If you don’t have a Loved item, these are Liked by nearly everyone: artisan goods (cheese, wine, jelly), most cooked dishes, all fruit-tree fruit, most gems, and most vegetables. The safest farm-grown gift is a Fruit Salad or a crop that villager specifically loves — per-villager lists live on pages like Leah and Emily.

How do you build hearts without gifts?

Talking daily, completing Help Wanted quests (+150), watching a movie they love, and dancing with someone at the Flower Dance all add up. But nothing beats the two-gifts-a-week rhythm — pair a cheap Liked gift with a Loved gift when you can afford one.
