Stardew Valley Name Cheat: Item Codes in Your Name (All Platforms)
How the Stardew Valley name cheat works — put [item IDs] in your farmer or animal name and get free items every time it's spoken. Works on console, PC, and mobile.
The name cheat is Stardew Valley’s only cheat that works on every platform — Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS, Android, PC. It doesn’t need mods or a chat console, just a text field and the right bracketed item IDs.
How does the name cheat work?
Put item IDs in square brackets inside a name field — farmer name or animal name both work. Every time the game displays that name in dialogue, the items spawn into your inventory:
[74]→ Prismatic Shard[163]→ Legend (the fish)[434]→ Stardrop[74][163][434]→ all three, every trigger
The cheat fires once per dialogue display — so triggering it efficiently means putting the named character in front of NPCs who say their name a lot, or spamming dialogue.
What’s the best way to trigger it?
Two standard setups:
- Farmer name: Name your farmer
[74][163][434]at character creation. Any NPC who says your name in dialogue — Gus behind the bar, Lewis in events, Marnie selling animals — triggers the drops. - Animal name: Buy an animal at Marnie’s and name it with the ID tags. Naming triggers the cheat once on purchase, so a chicken named
[74]gives you a shard immediately.
The Gus Saloon loop is the classic trigger — he addresses you by name when you buy, so standing at the counter spamming purchases prints items.
What should you actually put in the name?
The most useful codes:
| Code | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
[74] |
Prismatic Shard | Universal loved gift — see gift guide |
[163] |
Legend | Skips the legendary-fish fight |
[434] |
Stardrop | Max-energy upgrade — each one raises max energy permanently |
[789] |
Lucky Purple Shorts | The infamous quest item |
[268] |
Starfruit | 750g each — see Starfruit |
Three tags per name is the practical cap — more than that and names get truncated in dialogue.
Does the name cheat disable achievements?
No — same as the debug commands, Stardew has no anti-cheat. It’s a deliberately-left-in exploit ConcernedApe has acknowledged and kept.
Any caveats?
- Don’t over-stack — filling your inventory mid-dialogue can drop items on the floor
- Multiplayer-safe — works on co-op farms too
- 1.6.9+: the name cheat still works; the newer
/debugcommands are the PC-only upgrade
Frequently asked questions
Does the name cheat still work in 1.6? Yes — unchanged since the beginning.
Does it work on Switch/PS5? Yes — it’s just text, no console commands needed. Console players use this instead of /debug.
What if an item doesn’t spawn? The code has to be a valid numeric item ID — non-numeric text in brackets does nothing. Check IDs on the item ID list, and make sure your inventory has room.
