Stardew Valley Skills & Professions: Best Picks at Level 5 and 10

Every skill in Stardew Valley forks into two professions at level 5 and again at level 10. Pick wrong and you lock yourself out of the version that actually pays; pick right and the profession becomes the backbone of your income. Here’s the decision tree that matters.

How do professions work?

Each of the five skills — Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, Combat — gives you a choice at level 5 and a follow-up at level 10. The level-10 pick is downstream of level-5, so early choices shape what you can take later. Profession bonuses are permanent — except the Statue of Uncertainty in the sewers, which respecs one skill for 10,000g a pop.

What’s the best Farming profession?

Tiller (5) → Artisan (10) — the single most profitable profession line in the game. Tiller is +10% crop value; Artisan is +40% artisan-good value, which multiplies every keg, jar, and mayo machine on your farm. Pair with the Ancient Fruit or Starfruit engine and it’s effectively mandatory.

The alternative Rancher→Shepherd path is for animal-focused saves; Artisan still beats it on raw gold.

What’s the best Mining profession?

Two branches, one per level-5 pick:

  • Miner (5): +1 ore per vein → Blacksmith (metal bars +50% value) or Prospector (doubled coal finds)
  • Geologist (5): chance for gems to drop in pairs → Excavator (doubled geode finds) or Gemologist (gems +30% value)

Miner→Blacksmith is the ore-economy line; Geologist→Gemologist/Excavator is the Skull Cavern gem run. Neither lock is tragic — the respec book exists — but Miner is the default-safe level-5.

What’s the best Foraging profession?

Again one branch per level-5 pick:

  • Gatherer (5): chance to double-harvest forage → Botanist (foraged items always iridium quality) or Tracker (forage locations revealed)
  • Forester (5): +25% wood per tree → Lumberjack (hardwood drops from ordinary trees) or Tapper (syrups sell 25% more)

Gatherer→Botanist is the money line — iridium truffles are one of the biggest foraging paychecks in the game. Forester→Lumberjack is the hardwood play if crafting is the bottleneck.

What’s the best Fishing profession?

Fisher (5) → Angler or Pirate (10):

  • Fisher: +25% fish sell value
  • Angler: +50% fish sell value — best pure income
  • Pirate: chance for double treasure chests

If fishing is your main income, Fisher→Angler. If you’re farming treasure chests for iridium and artifacts, Fisher→Pirate. Trapper→Mariner/Luremaster is the crab-pot line — valid but niche.

What’s the best Combat profession?

Fighter (5) → Brute or Defender (10):

  • Fighter: +10% damage
  • Brute: +15% damage — stacking Fighter
  • Defender: +25 HP

Fighter→Brute for offense; Scout→Desperado is the popular alternative for crit builds. See the fishing guide for how skill XP is actually earned.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change professions later? Yes — the Statue of Uncertainty in the sewers respecs a skill for 10,000g, but the default assumption is permanent.

Is Artisan always the right pick? For money, yes — Artisan+Keg is the biggest single multiplier in the game. Rancher is only better if you’re deliberately avoiding artisan goods.

Which skill should I level first? Farming, because Artisan gates the biggest income multiplier. Fishing is the early XP source that gets you there.
