Stardew Valley Farm Types: All 8 Maps Compared (Which to Pick)

Farm choice is permanent — you pick at character creation and can’t change it later. The map decides your tillable area, your terrain challenges, and which playstyle the game nudges you toward. Here’s the honest version of the picker.

What are all the farm types?

Farm Tillable Special feature Pick if
Standard ~3,427 Maximum space You want pure farming
Riverland ~1,578 Fishable water on-farm You like fishing more than tilling
Forest ~1,413 Forage + hardwood respawns You want early-game hardwood
Hill-top ~1,648 Mining area on-farm You want quarry access
Wilderness ~2,131 Monsters spawn at night You want combat at home
Four Corners ~2,952 Four separated quadrants Multiplayer / theme builds
Beach ~2,700 No sprinklers; supply crates Challenge / aesthetic
Meadowlands ~2,066 Blue grass, coop + 2 chickens 1.6 starter — easy animals

Which farm is best for beginners?

Standard — maximum tillable land, no gimmicks, easiest to learn on. The space flexibility covers every mistake. Second-best beginner pick is Meadowlands (1.6): the blue grass feeds chickens free for most of the year, and the layout is roomy.

Which farms are hard mode?

Beach farm disables sprinkler use on sandy soil — which removes the single biggest labor-saving mechanic in the game. It’s beautiful and it’s a deliberate challenge pick. Riverland trades land for fishing: lowest tillable count, best on-farm fishing.

What’s the multiplayer farm?

Four Corners is designed for it — four quadrant plots separated by cliffs, each player gets their own territory. On a solo save it still works as a themed layout; in multiplayer it’s the intended pick.

Does farm type affect the story?

No — story, bundles, and villagers are identical across maps. Only the physical layout and starting constraints change.

Whichever map you pick, the early-game priorities stay the same — the beginner guide and the crop ranking apply to all eight.

Frequently asked questions

Can you change farm type later? No — it’s locked at character creation. Pick carefully.

Is the Beach farm worth it? Only if you specifically want the challenge. First saves should take Standard or Meadowlands.

What farm has the most space? Standard — about 3,400 tillable tiles.
